Treasures of Mexico

The magic of Elves has been speculated from all around for world for being small, invisible and naughty creatures or spirits which only special people might be able to see. From the very ancient times, we have heard of their probably existence in Nordic Countries, and Mexico is certainly, not the exception.

So far, there have been thousands of stories of native and foreign people talking about these small Aluxes or elves appearing one in a sudden in rural undergrowth leaving no path nor proof of their real existence.

“Alux “is the given word coming from the Mayan peoples. Natives from Playa del Carmen still believe that The Alux live in the quiet nature in South of Mexico, they do not wander around Playa del Carmen like ants so don´t be afraid, and even though it is very difficult to see an Alux, some people are convinced  that they are hidden somewhere in rural towns within Quintana Roo.

But what is it all this fuss about Mexican elves then? Are they lucky? When do they appear? Some people believe that Aluxes are related to the Mayan Culture during the Pre Columbian times and if you ever see one of them you should ask for a wish because as shooting stars, they are lucky and special creatures, they will never cause you any harm.

Southwest Mexico including Yucatan State and its surroundings are still being the centre of their appearance where apparently they inhabit jungles and mystic Connotes.

The story tells that Aluxes tend to live around farms, being commonly found in corn fields which according to the native people they spend seven years at farms to help the growing and keep the corn in good status for the family´s farmer so Aluxes scare off magpies and all kind of animals in the middle of the night that could possibly affect the crops.

After seven years, farmers must gratify them by making an altar and a ritual where they offer Aluxes among food smashed corn with water to thank them for keeping their crop production going on otherwise, Aluxes start playing ticks and being naughty to people specially children and horses as some superstitious people have shown that farmer’s horses have surprisingly woken up having a rare braid done in their tail with no reason of how it was made.

Mexico is a place full of rich history and mysticism, hidden and undiscovered stories and legends. The story of Elves in Mexico is one of the most precious legends which enriches not only Mexico but the fantasy that is still alive in Playa del Carmen.
